Golden Lotus

"This recent masterpiece by French artist Nicolas Chevallier skilfully brings to life a dramatic moment in maritime history.

In mid-winter 1962, the Chinese sailing junk Golden Lotus, crewed by four young Northland men, was en route from Hong Kong to New Zealand. Their remarkable 17,000-kilometre, months-long voyage in search of discovery and adventure had brought them to the final and most demanding leg of their journey - a crossing of the Tasman Sea from Sydney to New Zealand. Here they encountered a severe Southern Ocean storm sweeping northwards through the Tasman Sea. Storm-force winds and immense, ice-cold ocean swells forced Golden Lotus 170 kilometres off course. For twenty six hours she ran bare before the storm, battling enormous seas in one of the most challenging passages of her voyage.

This fine painting was commissioned by Graham Clifford, the youngest crew member of the Golden Lotus adventure. Graham was determined that both the vessel and the immense power and scale of the Tasman Sea should be portrayed with complete accuracy and authenticity. He was confident that he had found in Nicolas, an artist capable of capturing the scene as he remembered it—and this remarkable painting has proved his judgement entirely correct."

“We recently commissioned Nicolas Chevallier to create a triptych painting of our home on Radar Hill and, from start to finish, the process was trouble-free.  It was a joy to work with Nicolas. He came to our house, took many photographs, sat down with us at length to get a feel for our expectations, and expedited the work to fit our schedule. "Le bonheur d’avoir une plage néo zélandaise à la maison , moi qui voyage peu ! L’impatience de voir et recevoir ce tableau . J’étais émue ( j’en ai presque versé une petite larme ..) de le voir et l’avoir entre les mains ! Il est encore plus beau qu’en vidéo !
Il est arrivé bien emballé et sans égratignure , top ! De plus j’ai trouvé que les frais de port étaient peu élevés vu la distance .
Quoi te dire d’autres? Ah siiii ! Meeeeeerrrrrrrccccciiiiiiiiiii !"

Kingfish

The collector's story was to encapsulate the beauty of a kingfish in a threatened ocean by human impact. Diving from a calm seascape into the crystal-clear ocean teeming with life, a king fish is the centre of the piece of art. Amongst the marine life a transparent plastic bag is drifting in the water.

 

Pōhutukawa reaching out to sea II

The collector's friend bought the original painting and he really wanted this painting as well. So I created for him a duplicate of Whangaroa Pōhutukawa reaching out to sea II with the added requests for his car and boat. He loved it!

The collector envisioned a large Tauranga beach scene with her granddaughter dancing on the beach at sunrise. And the Whakakotahitanga flag on the rock.
